Sixteen Shraddhas i.e. Pitru Paksha, has commenced today (Wednesday), starting from Ashwin Krishna Pratipada. This ritual period spans from Ashwin Krishna Pratipada to Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, during which offerings such as Tarpan, Pinda, and Sidadan are made to departed ancestors, hence the name Sixteen Shraddhas.
In Vedic Sanatan Hindu tradition, Sixteen Shraddhas are observed before festivals, yagnas, and major undertakings. It is a traditional belief that during these sixteen days, ancestors expect Tarpan and Pinda from their descendants. Performing these rituals is thought to fulfill one's duties towards one's forebears and absolve one from ancestral debt.
